79th SAMA National Conference

The 79th SAMA National Conference will be hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Region in Durban from 26 - 29 October  2015.

SAMA has adopted ICOM’s International Museums Day 2015 theme “Museums for a sustainable society” for this conference.

Museums can play a vital role in educating communities to create a sustainable ecological , economical and social environment.
The theme highlights the role of museums in raising public awareness about the need for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and that uses resources in a way that respects living systems.

People have responded enthusiastically to the call for papers and the Keynote address will be presented by Mr Guy Redman, Deputy Head, Libraries and Heritage Department at Ethekwini Municipality.

Post conference tours will take place on Friday 30 October to the world famous Main Cave Rock Art Site at Giants Castle and to Inanda Seminary.  ( Download the Draft Programme for more details )

SAMA lends support to initiatives in the museum education sector.

At a SAMA Council meeting in 2014 it was agreed that a promotional web page for the Western Cape Museum Educator Group could be provided on the SAMA website. The Western Cape Museum Educator Group activities are associated with many SAMA member institutions and the web page aims to assist these institutions and the education sector by promoting access to a variety of relevant CAPS linked programmes.

The Western Cape Educator Group

Currently, the group has over 80 individual members from 40 institutions across the Peninsula. Anyone can join and it is free. Meetings are held three or four times a year with topics generated by the group. Meetings are hosted by members of the group and are rotated. They always include a taster of a site’s programmes providing a chance to see what others do. A Google Groups listserve enhances communication between meetings.

The webpage

One of the group's tasks this year has been to help teachers plan CAPS-linked school outings by compiling school programmes from some of our members in and around Cape Town. This was in response to teachers’ suggestions at one of our meetings. Check out the “For Teachers” tab. Spread the word to teachers and come back often as it will continue to be updated.

For more information or to join the group, contact Helen Joannides on h_joannides@hotmail.com. If you are not in the Western Cape, you can always see what we are chatting about on http://groups.google.com/group/wcme.
